I always spend a long time choosing my accommodation for holidays, for certain holidays I don’t mind not having the best accommodation like on a city break because I’ll hardly be there. But in Mexico I wanted to make sure we got a really nice hotel, I spent a few hours before booking our flights finding this hotel and I was so pleased with it. I didn’t want to book into a commercial resort on the Riviera Maya and I wanted to stay in the centre of Playa Del Carmen.

Magic Blue Spa Hotel is the perfect boutique oasis right in the centre of Playa Del Carmen, just a couple of minutes walk from 5th Avenue the main tourist strip filled with shops, bars and restaurants.

We got the public ADO bus from Cancun Airport which took about 1 hour and dropped us at Playa Del Carmen bus station, the hotel was about 12 minutes walk from there.

Whether you look at it as a positive or negative, that’s up to you. The hotel is situated directly opposite CocoBongos, which is a amazing show and nightclub experience. For us, it was a positive as we only had to stumble across the road at 3am. We weren’t affected by noise whatsoever from our room as we were on the back but I think if our room was located on the front it could have been noisy late at night.

The Room

The room was beautiful, very spacious, a big bed, good air conditioning, wifi and lots of space for our luggage. the room was cleaned each day which was nice. There was a large smart TV with American channels which we didn’t use. A fridge in the room with water (as you can’t drink the tap water) and snacks which got filled everyday. The basin and mirror pictured below was situated outside the bathroom as the bathroom was small with just a large stand alone shower and toilet. Each room has a private balcony area with a hammock and chair overlooking the pool area. Our room was situated on the top floor so we had great views.

On arrival and whilst checking in they gave us cold face clothes and lemonade. Then a member of the team showed us to the room and explained all the amenities. Throughout the our stay all the staff were wonderful and so friendly. Every time we walked through reception they opened the door for us and said hello. They gave us recommendations for local restaurants, directions and tours to book. The pool area was great, we managed to get sun loungers every time we went down, there is a snack bar and drinks available, with happy hour every evening.

Mostly importantly you’ll be thinking how much was this, well actually it was very reasonable – I think! I booked this hotel through (naughty I know!) on their Booking Basic scheme via Agoda and it was non-refundable. We actually only booked this holiday about 14 days before we went so I was happy to book on the non-refundable and it was cheaper than direct. It cost £573.00 for 7 nights including breakfast which was a buffet, served in the restaurant each morning. img_2321
